Prompt 7: Community {via Reverb 10}
"Where have you discovered community, online or otherwise, in 2010? What community would you like to join, create or more deeply connect with in 2011?" (Author: Cali Harris)
I've talked about a similar topic before in a post I did on Tribe, so I won't bore you with the repetition, but I will share two communities I've recently been a part of. First is a wonderful group of women I met online through Susannah Conway's e-course, Unraveling, at the end of last year. I've mentioned this course a ton already (here, here, and here are a few examples), so all I can say is get over there and sign up for Susannah's course, because it's awesome and you won't regret it! The second community I've enjoyed being a part of this past year is the Book Club I joined at the end of 2009. We've read some great books and have had even greater discussions; and one of the things I love most about this group is a lot of the books we read have strong female characters and thought-provoking story lines. It's also given me a chance to read books I wouldn't otherwise pick up or be interested in. And since books are what a Book Club does best, here is a list of the books we've read to-date:
{1. Broken For You by Stephannie Kallos 2. Jesus Land by Julia Scheeres 3. The Elegance of the Hedgehog by Muriel Barbery 4. Pride and Predjudice and Zombies by Jane Austen and Seth Grahame-Smith}
{1. The Chess Garden by Brooks Hansen 2. Amy and Isabelle by Elizabeth Strout 3. Speaker For The Dead by Orson Scott Card 4. A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith}
{1. Fall on Your Knees by Ann-Marie McDonald 2. A Yellow Raft in Blue Water by Michael Dorris 3. Brave New World by Aldous Huxley 4. Three Junes by Julia Glass}
{1. Prayer for Owen Meany by John Irving 2. Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro 3. To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee 4. The Space Between Us by Thrity Umrigar}
One of my favorite books so far has been Fall on Your Knees by Ann-Marie McDonald. It was dark and hopeful and beautifully written, with complex female characters and a riveting storyline. I was also surprised to find that I really enjoyed reading Speaker for the Dead which is Science Fiction - a genre I've never read before, that is, unless Harry Potter and A Wrinkle in Time count? I look forward to what my community of bookworms brings in 2011...
As far as a community I'd like to join, create, or more deeply connect with? I'm going to have to think about that and get back to you...
